Araw ng karapatan ng manunulat (Writers' Rights Day)

ARAW NG KARAPATAN NG MANUNULAT (WRITER'S RIGHTS DAY)

dalawampu't siyam na taon nang nakararaan
nang Writers' Rights Day sa Amerika'y pinasimulan
ng unyon at grupong manunulat na karapatan
ang pangunahing isyung kanilang dedepensahan

karapatang pantao ang karapatang magsulat
kalayaan nilang magpahayag at magsiwalat
karapatang halungkatin ang isyu at magmulat
taliwas man sa pamahalaan ang naisulat

ayon sa kasaysayan: ang  National Writers Union,
ang Authors Guild, Published Authors Network,
the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America,
Romance Writers of America, at inilunsad nila
ang dalawang oras na protesta sa Grand
Central Terminal, kung saan nilagdaan
ang Declaration of Writers’ Economic Rights.
Dagdag pa: writers called for more timely
and higher pay, additional pay for subsequent
use of their work, increased copyright protection,
better treatment of writers by publishers.

ang mga isyu:  difficulty in getting health insurance,
establishing a minimum standard for writers’ contracts,
making publishers assume or share the cost of libel
insurance, and giving writers a fair amount of time
to return advances on canceled projects.

oo, Writers' Rights Day sana'y mapagtibay sa bansa
pagkat manunulat ay kabilang sa manggagawa
dapat maorganisa't magpahayag din ng sadya
upang manunulat sa bansang ito'y di kawawa

June 09: Writers Rights Day

Writers Rights Day was created in 1992 to bring attention to the plight of B-list authors (and many A-listers too). At the first observance writers from the Authors Guild, the National Writers Union, the Published Authors Network, the Romance Writers of America, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America staged a two-hour protest at Grand Central Terminal, where they signed a Declaration of Writers’ Economic Rights.

Among the issues were the difficulty in getting health insurance, establishing a minimum standard for writers’ contracts, making publishers assume or share the cost of libel insurance, and giving writers a fair amount of time to return advances on canceled projects.

We’ve all heard about the multi-million-dollar book deal, but that is rare. A 2018 Authors Guild survey found the average writer make $6,080. Some full-time writers have $20,300. Authors also contend with canceled contracts and having their book abandoned when a publisher is bought out by a new company.

WRITERS' RIGHTS DAY

On the first Writers' Rights Day, held on June 9, 1992, writers called for more timely and higher pay, additional pay for subsequent use of their work, and increased copyright protection. About 30 organizations sponsored the day, including the National Writers Union, the Authors Guild, the Published Authors Network, the Romance Writers of America, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The organizations claimed that writers were being ignored and abused by publishers.

As part of the day, a rally calling for higher pay and better treatment of writers by publishers was held at Grand Central Station in New York City. The Declaration of Writers' Electronic Rights was signed at the rally. Chapters of the National Writers Union held workshops and demonstrations around the country. Although the official observance of the day appears to only have been in 1992, the day has lived on informally since.
